Stress relief = Finding the right therapist.
Take the time to find the right Massage Therapist
You have decided you want to add massage to your wellness program, but with all the choices out there, how do you choose a therapist? I believe the most important thing is that you are comfortable with the person you choose to perform soft tissue work on you, but here are some things to consider when making your decision.
Is the therapist licensed and insured? In order to legally perform massage, a therapist must have completed the required coursework and any licensing exam. In addition, there are continuing education requirements to maintain licensure. A massage therapist needs to be licensed and insured to legally practice.
Does your therapist communicate clearly? A massage therapist should do their part to foster a relationship that is informative and supportive. When you meet with your therapist does he or she include you in the plan for your session? Do they ask you what your goals are for the session? Remember, although the therapist is a trained expert, you are hiring them to accomplish your wellness goals. A good therapist will include you in developing your treatment plan and will make sure you are in agreement with how the sessions will proceed.

Are you comfortable with providing feedback to your therapist? As important as it is that your therapist communicates with you, you also need to feel comfortable communicating with them. If you are on the table and something is uncomfortable, you need to be able to speak up and should expect the therapist to respect what you say.
Is the therapist able to deliver results? While it may take several sessions to see major results, your therapist should be asking you if you have seen results, performing range of motion tests and generally monitoring what is working and not working so they can adjust their treatment approach.
Don't be afraid to perform an interview of sorts with a potential therapist, ask questions and get a feel for who they are and how they approach treatment. Ask people who you trust, medical providers, family and friends for recommendations. In the end, you need to be happy and comfortable with whom you chose.
