There are many causes for low back pain and sciatica pain.

  • Forward Head Translation and loss of the natural curve on your neck and low back can create increased pressure and degeneration of the joints in the low back and pelvis. This can result in pain and increased pressure on the nerves in the low back, glute and legs. Over time this can even produce numbness and tingling (sometimes called sciatica). This can be made worse by sitting at work or in the bucket seats of your car for long periods, just to name a few of the every day actions that cause this problem.
  • Pelvic Rotation can cause low back and sciatica by creating rotation of the lumbar vertebrae above the pelvis. This creates intense pressure on the nerves in that area that over time result in pain and discomfort.
  • Past Physical Traumas like car accidents, sports and weekend warrior injuries create vertebral misalignments called subluxations. Top 5 WORST Things People Typically Do To Their Low Backs When trying To Avoid Pain

1. Take Drugs Or Analgesics
Taking drugs and analgesics only mask the symptoms and don’t address the actual cause of the problem allowing it to progressively degenerate and grow into a bigger problem.

2. Pop/Crack Their Own Backs
Manipulating your own low back or pelvis is like cracking your knuckles. It may feel good for the moment but because you don’t know which joints are the real culprits or even what direction the joint or joints are misaligned, you are much more likely to create more trauma and future degeneration of those joints, cartilage, ligaments and adjacent nerves.

3. Get Cortisone Shots
Did you know that a cortisone shot is just a high powered anti-inflammatory? If its job is to reduce or get rid of inflammation, then the real question should be…”what is causing the inflammation?” Secondarily, a recent study in The Lancet reported that “Although cortisone injections provide short term pain relief in a high percentage of cases, their use produces worse long-term results than other treatments- or no treatment at all.”

4. Use Heat On Their Low Back
For a lot of people, heat is a “go to” when a body part doesn’t feel quite right. But it’s important to understand that the low back is a series of intricate joints surrounded by ligaments and muscles to aid in stabilization and motion. When the low back is injured or irritated the body will respond by sending swelling to those effected joints to protect them as aid in the healing. Depending on the injury, the swelling can become extreme, setting off pain receptors in the connective tissue. So, at this point, people may go to heat because that is what they heard or have been told to do. Although heat may soothe in the moment, heat draws fluid to that area. This actually will increase the swelling and prolong the problem, and in some cases even make it worse. Ice is the more high percentage action. Ice reduces the swelling with no adverse side effects. Ice will also break the pain cycle in many cases.

5. Doing The “Jane Fonda” Neck Roll
Remember in the 70’s when Jane Fonda led us through a home workout. Remember how she would start every routine by tucking her chin to her chest and then rolling her head to the left and right and then all the way back. Makes me cringe just thinking about it.
